This Pen of the Year for is inspired by traditional processes employed by Japansese sword makers. The barrel is magnolia wood which has been stained, painted, sanded and polished multiple times. It is inscribed in 24 carat gold varnish with a quote , regarded by the Japanese as having been the greatest swordsman of all time: 'Today I win against myself of yesterday'. A metal plate engraved with the gold plated Japanese character for adorns the ruthenium-coated cap. The end cap is also engraved with the symbol for the word 'tsuba' or hand guard, the device that protects the hand when holding the weapon.
